Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing FSTDs: On the Road to Harmonisation

Wednesday 18 - Thursday 19 November 2009
No.4 Hamilton Place, London, UK

The Royal Aeronautical Society Autumn Flight Simulation Conference is a well established and highly successful annual event. The 2009 Conference will examine and progress the issues raised by the progress in the design, use and accreditation of Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTDs). The main emphasis will be given to lower order, fixed base devices.

Commercial pressures are ensuring that flight crew training is conducted in the most cost-effective training devices. Also concerns over rotary wing operational safety trends are moving regulators to consider more extensive use of fixed base simulators. This trend is not only seen in the civil world; military training programs are also making more extensive use of lower order devices.

Recent work completed by the International Working Group will shortly be published by ICAO as ICAO 9625 rev.3 and this has defined technical standards for the complete suite of training devices. The process adopted and the results will be presented and the impact this will have on the lower order devices will be discussed. In addition, the status of work on a similar exercise for rotary wing devices will be presented.

Military training programs will also present their views.

Delegates will be updated and invited to comment on the progress of two other RAeS initiatives; the Committee for Upset Recovery Training and the status of the updates to the RAeS Simulator Evaluation Handbook.
